Thursday - Unexpected day of rest

I took the day off. A day off from work, and from exercise. It was supposed to be spinning day, but for what it's worth, I wasn't really looking forward to it anyway. Karen, the normal (awesome) instructor is out of town to some big convention in Chicago this weekend. We were going to have the stand instructor Marianne. She's ok and all, but I just don't enjoy my time much in her class. It's a different routine and a different kind of work-out. Ah well. I bet my body is happy that I didn't push it today.
I creaked and cracked getting out of bed this morning. Mainly from my ankles and knees. I'm not in any pain from those joints which is good, but it was a bid concerning earlier. My left foot arch started to hurt yesterday when I strapped on my hiking shoes for kickball. It came out of no where. I hadn't had any discomfort to speak of all morning. Currently it's still a bit tender, but not as bad as yesterday. I walked around a bit when Jannelle and I went out, and it wasn't in much pain. I guess that's good. The only other pain to note is that my neck is a bit stiff. As you pointed out, Steph, It may be from tensing up my shoulders while running. I will have to pay more attention to that next time.
Speaking of next time, we need to figure out when that will be. And how far... I really think I could stretch our distance up to 4 miles, but I was reading about increasing distance and got a bit concerned with what I read. It mentioned only increasing distance by a max of 10% between weeks. What do you think about that Steph? I'll say something to Daryl about running, tonight during raid. I'll see if he wants to run Saturday morning. He is an early riser like me, so I'll tend to think he might agree to run. we shall see.

Oh, a day off from work! Wow, hope it's gone well! I suppose you guys have a lot of Daryl prep to do. And it definitely sounds like a day off from exercise was a good decision. Good job listening to your body!

Your arch pain is intriguing to me. I'm glad it hasn't gotten worse and you can walk around on it. I would just say keep rubbing and stretching it. It's probably just your body adapting to running more. It happens and don't worry about it, though I'm sure it's annoying when little pains come out of no where.

And yes the neck/shoulder pain - I bet that's from how you carry your arms. You'll get used to that too. I used to get really bad neck pain when I went on runs and it went away permanently as I got stronger. I bet that shoulder shrug weights exercise would be good just to give a little more strength in that area. And also just remembering to periodically relax your arms. I have to do this too still. I'll remind you when we go again :)

As for the distance increase, yes there's the well-known 10% rule. I have never mathematically followed it, but have always tried to just increase a random slow safeness while listening to my body (which you are already doing). I think jumping from 3.2 to 4 might be a little much given your arch, IT band, and the fact that you've never ran that distance. But there's other "ways around it" such as taking walk breaks so that you still cover the distance but it's easier on your body. Personally I would recommend we do 3.5 at a comfy pace Saturday, then go back to 3 twice more. See how you feel after that and then jump to 4. Sound like a plan?!?!?

Yes, please get Daryl to run Saturday morning!! We can all party Saturday night! I'll see if Speedy-Greg (who is also good with gays) would want to plod along with us, but I doubt it, lol

Oh and by the way, I am taking an unexpected day off today too... I am SORE. I think it was the sprinting during kickball. No need to push it. I'll run tomorrow morning nice and easy, perhaps in the rain.

Keep resting up and stretching and it will be awesome Saturday!
